With a multi generational breeding program now well into the second decade, we have proven the excellence of our efforts. By holding back our own puppies we’ve been able to choose the best of the pairings. We select Bernese puppies based on conformation, disposition, health screening, litter interaction and socialization testing, resulting in the ‘cream of the crop’ for our breeding stock. We purposely keep a large selection of dogs in our breeding program. This gives us the ability to be very specific and selective in our pairings and gives us more options for optimal litter timing, while having a large genepool to work with. Most of our Bernese breeding dogs live with families who are in our Guardian program and each dog will only have a few litters in her lifetime.
We are happy to boast that our breeding program offers the best in bloodlines, longevity, and breed and health standards. We use the far superior method for the evaluation of predisposition to hip dysplasia through PennHIP as opposed to the commonly used method by OFA. PennHIP is backed by numerous scientific studies including the American Veterinary Medical Association and has 30 years of research validating its efficacy, OFA has zero scientific backed research showing its efficacy in preventing hip dysplasia. Not only have our dogs been screened through PennHIp, they are scoring in the top 5% of the entire BMD database! We also use Embark for our genetic screening, while it tests for over 200 genetic issues, our goal is to ensure our dogs will not pass along breed specific diseases such as DM, SODIB and Vwd. As is commonly known, the incidence for cancer in the BMD breed is relatively high. Because we can trace back through the generations of our breeding program, we can see and say with confidence that cancer in our lines is extremely low.
